ISDEX Up 12% Internet Stocks Lead Market Gainers

Sex, lies and videotape–nothing like a triple feature to whet Wall
Street’s interest in Internet stocks again as ISDEX gained 12% the past
week, outpacing the flat Dow and NASDAQ.

President Clinton and a few
hours of video and a 400-page investigation by Ken Starr posted Web-wide
had the indirect benefit of placing the Internet as the platform of the
future for news and information dissemination.

The soap opera aside, the Internet as a distribution medium
riding side by side with the facts in words and images, provided an
unparalleled
look at how news and information will likely flow for any major event on
the planet
from this day forward.

Nightline on at 11 p.m. is
like waiting for cement to dry in the new ‘instant media’ era. CNN is not
as relevant as it was when the Gulf War broke and the world tuned in. With
‘instant media,’ fact and opinion collide, and commerce and content share the
same bit rate.

It’s raw, unfiltered, unpasteurized media, and skyscrapers and old
notions should watch out. 1998 Mecklermedia
(NASDAQ:MECK) "The Internet Media Company"

The important point from an investment standpoint is not who or why or what
or how or when or how many times, it’s the fact that the Internet was the
medium that mattered most when the biggest news event of the current
administration broke. Coincidentally, the news leak that started it all
many months ago was also on the Web, via a rumor columnist posting on
AOL.

Nor was it surprising then that the folks that brought the video to more
than 1 million eyeballs, Broadcast.com (NASDAQ:BCST), basked in the
limelight with a 46% run to $50.88 per share since September 15.

Never mind that the “video” quality on the Internet was about as clear as
watching a TV from 300 meters away underwater while hurricane Georges
dropped in for a swirl fest and a warped soundtrack played.

The second biggest ISDEX gainer was RealNetworks (NASDAQ:RNWK), the leader in
streaming media software (the “TV” of the Internet). RNWK was up 36% to
$26.75 per share.

Forget the fact that Media Metrix reported only 25% of all PC users have
the necessary PCs to watch videos on a computer or that old-fashioned TV
provided a superior product as a video medium, or that workers (who
comprise a large part of Net users) can’t watch a four-hour video on a
PC.

All criticisms aside, the above two stocks more than any other, gave
investors a chance to bet on the future of the Internet in its
ever-evolving nature to be the chameleon of all media, and perhaps “king of
all media.”

Others who rode the tide include Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN),
which began taking pre-orders of the video; Inktomi (NASDAQ:INKT), whose
cache network software was in place at AOL, Microsoft and other sites and
makes delivering popular files easy and quicker. Also included are the
search and guide
stocks Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO), Netscape (NASDAQ:NSCP), Excite (NASDAQ:XCIT),
Lycos (NASDAQ:LCOS), Infoseek (NASDAQ:SEEK).
