Until Wednesday, it wasn’t shaping up as a very good week for Internet
stocks. But Wednesday arrived in a big way, bringing with it huge one-day
gains for a number of stocks that otherwise had been down since July 5.
The main catalyst for the sharp upturn was 1) Indications that interest
rates won’t be raised later this month; 2) Yahoo’s stellar earnings; 3)
General optimism over upcoming quarterly reports; 4) All or some of the
above. A colleague of mine thinks Yahoo set up the market by downplaying Q2
expectations, thus getting a bounce of relief when it beat analysts’
earnings estimates and doubled revenue. He also thinks most ad-supported
sites will exceed projected numbers for Q2, perhaps sparking a summer run-up
for stocks many investors have been left for dead.
Some of these companies better hope that’s what happens, because I believe
this is an especially critical earnings season. A number of ‘Net stocks have
seen rallies that began in mid-April fizzle out, leaving them back or even
below the lows they reached when the market melted down in March.
With investors in the middle of a serious period of sorting winners from
losers, it behooves battered ‘Net tickers to show signs of life now.
Otherwise, they may find themselves permanently placed in the loser pile. Of
course, many of them fully deserve that assignation, but for those on the
cusp, the window of opportunity is now. The next three weeks will be
extremely important.
(I’ll be on vacation next week, so there will be no StockTracker Daily
column online or Internet StockTracker
weekly newsletter. See you in late July.)
NOTE: Market Cap figures are in millions of dollars unless otherwise
indicated. Float figures are in millions of shares, also unless otherwise
indicated.

Aether Systems, the top-performing Internet stock in the first half of the
year, finally cools off, dropping nearly 20% this week. Since closing at
$205 per share on June 30, AETH dropped for seven straight trading days. The
slump was short-lived, however, for the stock shot up $27.31 on Thursday.
Wireless systems provider interWAVE is this week’s sector leader and No. 3
gainer among all ‘Net stocks. IWAV announced this week the purchase of
Ireland’s Microcellular Systems in a $12.5 million deal. Insider selling
helps push Infospace to the bottom of the pack.

Judging by the flat debut Wednesday of Sohu.com and the recent buzz on the
street, Chinese portal IPOs these days are DOA. That may explain the surge
that took Chinadotcom to the top of this sector. After all, why bet on a
newbie when you can buy shares of a Chinese portal stock that has
demonstrated a strong upside? CHINA’s announcement that it is starting a
venture unit also may have boosted investor interest. I had this weird dream
that I had put Go.com on my HotWatch 2000 list of 10 “stocks to watch.” Even
news that the next installment of ABCNEWS.com’s monthly Webcast is an
investigation of online prostitution and escort services failed to move the
stock north. When sex doesn’t help you sell, you’ve got a real problem.
Remember when I wrote that many ‘Net stocks saw April rallies fizzle? Ask
Jeeves is one of them. ASKJ shares hit a new low closing price of $14 per
share on Tuesday. Maybe investors should try asking Jeeves for their money
back.

The good news for healthcare e-commerce/political software provider
Netivation.com (gee, I wonder why there’s a problem) is that its stock was
the No. 2 gainer across the board. The bad news is that NTVN is coming off
all-time lows and is struggling to stay above $2 per share. I would say the
bad outweighs the good here. “E-learning” products and services player
DigitalThink has been hot lately, gaining 71% in the past month. This week
shares get a nice bump from a key strategic alliance with global information
technology services giant EDS, which has agreed to buy $50 million in DTHK
software and services over the next five years for its own employees and
(separately) a
lso promised to deliver $100 million in revenue to
DigitalThink. As someone who has always been skeptical about the revenue
potential of “distance learning” on the ‘Net, I’m impressed.
HealthCentral.com and HealthGate Data are looking, well, unhealthy.

When Internet StockTracker was launched in April 1999, it included a feature
called “Pennies From Hell,” a motley collection of stocks selling below $5
per share. Perhaps it’s time to revive that feature. This time, though, we
could call it “E-tailers.” Sector leader audiohighway.com buys some time by
forming a strategic alliance with Warner Music Group. AHWY must pay Warner
for t
he right to stream Warner music videos from its site; in return the
music industry giant will buy an equity stake in audiohighway.com, giving it
some much-needed cash. European online travel site ebookers.com on Monday
reassured investors that it is not running out of money and is close to
securing additional funding. The company was responding to reports that it
was going broke. We’ll know more next week, when EBKR releases Q2 earnings.

The market is down on online brokers. The market is down on Internet
incubators. No wonder the Financial Services sector is down. Like a
light-hitting baseball team that scratches out the winning run with two
singles and a stolen base, online Visa card distributor NextCard strings
together some smallish daily gains to top the sector this week. E Com
Ventures and onlinetradinginc.com, in contrast, go down swinging. ECMV has

B2B channel management product and services provider Click Commerce has
lived a charmed life since going public on June 27, when it closed at
$17.63. Since then shares have more than doubled in price through Thursday,
finishing at $36.50. B2B software company InterWorld, which targets
manufacturers, retailers and distributors, grabs the runner-up slot this
week, thanks in part to news that it landed clothing retailer AnnTaylor.com
as a customer. Art Technology Group benefits from news that it wooed
American Airlines away from competitor BroadVision, which lands in the
basement. ATG will manage the airline’s Web site.

No news behind firewall vendor WatchGuard Technologies big week. There’s
also no news behind WGRD’s 139% increase since May 31. But there it is.
WatchGuard easily outdistances second-place finisher Pilot Network Services,
which has recovered from a hit it took in mid-June when it was mentioned in
a Barron’s article as one of the Internet companies in danger of running out
of cash in the next few months. Bear Stearns cuts its rating of Entrust
Technologies to “attractive” from “buy” following the company’s merger with
enCommerce, citing (among other things) higher perceived integration risks.
A question: If a stock is rated below “buy,”
how can it be “attractive”?

You don’t usually see the market taking a long view when a company announces
short-term restructuring costs, but investors seem to love VantageMed’s
plans to reduce operating expenses. So much so that VMDC was the top gainer
among all ‘Net stocks this week. The healthcare information software and
services company last week said it would take a restructuring charge of $2
million to $3 million in Q2, write down some intangible assets and reduce
operating expenses. Content management software provider Interwoven is the
top gainer in the past month of all Internet stocks, nearly doubling in
price. This week’s advance can be credited in large part to its planned
purchase of Neonyoyo (no, I’m not making that name up), a private company
that makes software that enables the delivery of targeted XML content via
wireless.

Messaging services provider Mail.com rises on Tuesday and Wednesday on heavy
volume triggered by call buying from a single options trader, according to
someone at the Chicago Board Options Exchange. MAIL also announced a
partnership with BulletIN.net, a wireless products and services vendor, that
will enable Mail.com customers in the United Kingdom to send and receive
e-mail using wireless handsets. Internet banking services provider Netzee is
another company on Barron’s latest list of expected cash-burn victims. After
a couple of weeks of threatening to fall below $5 per share – and thus
qualifying as an e-tailer – Netzee rallies for no particular reason.
Internet portal software maker Fusion Network Holdings has lost 41% of its
value in the past month, leaving it with an anemic market cap of $38.6
million. But that’s still more than twice as much as eFax.com’s $14 million
cap.

The big loser this week among all sectors, Advertising/Marketing sees only
one stock register double-digit gains, while a half-dozen turn the reverse
trick on the south side. On a monthly basis, only two companies here – this
week’s sector leader, Prime Response, and Netcentives – have done much of
anything. Prime, which sells customer relationship marketing software, gets
its first payoff from a recent alliance with Anderson Consulting, signing up

This week’s top gainer is also this month’s top gainer. Last week Inforte
was added to the Russell 2000 Index, good for a nice bump. The company
climbed from $44 to $55 per share on Wednesday alone, riding the wave of
Internet gainers. Viant catches the same wave, getting a little less
distance. MarchFirst has rolled out a national advertising campaign with
some nice television spots. Luminant Worldwide is making a run at its
all-time low close of $6.38 set on May 31.

Like Click Commerce, IP voice infrastructure provider Sonus Networks has
avoided the Internet IPO market meltdown. SONS went public on May 25,
closing at $50.50. On Wednesday it closed above $200 per share for the first
time, after soaring 42% since last Friday (though the stock gave back nearly
$10 on Thursday). Joining SONS on the list of 10 top gainers is Alteon
WebSystems, which announced this week that it reached operating
profitability in the quarter ended June 30, three quarters ahead of
schedule. ATON makes Web switches and other traffic management products.
With several other double-digit gainers and no big losers, this sector
easily leads all others for the week.

An attempted rally by Pacific Internet in June lost steam; now it’s trying
again, with a sector-leading surge that wipes out most of the past month’s
losses. Nearly all of this week’s gains, however, came on Wednesday, when
the entire market was lifted. With nothing specific to prop it up, PCNTF on
Thursday gave back half of the previous day’s gains. Deutsche Bank assigns a
“buy” rating and $13.20 per share price target to Israeli access provider
Internet Gold. I keep hearing about how hot Internet appliances will be, but
that heat hasn’t done much for shares of Netpliance since the company went
public on March 17, closing at $22.06. NPLI shares are down 73% from their
first-day close.
