Spyglass, Inktomi Partner On Information Appliance Product

Spyglass Inc. and Inktomi Corp. Monday partnered to integrate Spyglass’ Prism content delivery system with Inktomi’s Traffic Server cache platform.

Spyglass Prism for Traffic Server will give ISPs the ability to streamline content for non-PC devices, such as hand-held PCs, set-top boxes and Internet-enabled mobile phones. The system takes existing Internet content and adapts it to conform to the requirements of a hand-held product’s Web browser.

“With shipments of Internet-enabled devices predicted to exceed shipment of PCs before the end of 2001, service providers have a unique opportunity to deliver services tailored to the needs of mobile users and home information systems,” said Jack Armstrong, Spyglass’ director of Internet solutions.

Spyglass Prism, introduced in 1997, is one of the first commercial products designed to provide content to non-PC devices and wireless networks. Inktomi’s Traffic Service helps Internet providers, backbone networks and Web hosting companies increase bandwidth efficiency by delivering content more efficiently.
