Stocks lost ground in light volume on Monday, as European markets remained closed for the long holiday weekend.
The Nasdaq declined 1 to 1424, the S&P 500 lost 1 to 892, and the Dow slipped 8 to 8328. Volume declined to 1.1 billion shares on the NYSE, and 1.26 billion on the Nasdaq. Advancers led 18-14 on the NYSE, and 16-14 on the Nasdaq. Upside volume was 56% on the NYSE, and 53% on the Nasdaq. New highs-new lows were 136-14 on the NYSE, and 147-31 on the Nasdaq.
After the close, E.piphany, Silicon Labs, Lending Tree, J2 Global, Cognizantand JDAtopped estimates, while Sprintmissed. RealNetworksannounced it will acquire Listen.com for $36 million.
During the day, Internet Security, Netflix, Gatewayand PMC-Sierrasurged on earnings. Scientific Atlantadeclined on its results, while Xilinxand WebExedged higher.
Ask Jeevessurged 6% on its first marketing push in two years.
AMDrose 3.6% ahead of the company’s Opteron release.
Overstock.comfell 4% after settling a dispute with Microsoft.
HProse 0.7% on analyst assertions that the company holds the early lead in on-demand computing.
Yahoohit another new 52-week high.
