Stocks Slip In Light Volume

Stocks lost ground in light volume on Monday, as European markets remained closed for the long holiday weekend.

The Nasdaq declined 1 to 1424, the S&P 500 lost 1 to 892, and the Dow slipped 8 to 8328. Volume declined to 1.1 billion shares on the NYSE, and 1.26 billion on the Nasdaq. Advancers led 18-14 on the NYSE, and 16-14 on the Nasdaq. Upside volume was 56% on the NYSE, and 53% on the Nasdaq. New highs-new lows were 136-14 on the NYSE, and 147-31 on the Nasdaq.

After the close, E.piphany , Silicon Labs , Lending Tree , J2 Global , Cognizant and JDA topped estimates, while Sprint missed. RealNetworks announced it will acquire Listen.com for $36 million.

During the day, Internet Security , Netflix , Gateway and PMC-Sierra surged on earnings. Scientific Atlanta declined on its results, while Xilinx and WebEx edged higher.

Ask Jeeves surged 6% on its first marketing push in two years.

AMD rose 3.6% ahead of the company’s Opteron release.

Overstock.com fell 4% after settling a dispute with Microsoft .

HP rose 0.7% on analyst assertions that the company holds the early lead in on-demand computing.

Yahoo hit another new 52-week high.
