The Nasdaq declined 1 to 1424, the S&P 500 lost 1 to 892, and the Dow slipped 8 to 8328. Volume declined to 1.1 billion shares on the NYSE, and 1.26 billion on the Nasdaq. Advancers led 18-14 on the NYSE, and 16-14 on the Nasdaq. Upside volume was 56% on the NYSE, and 53% on the Nasdaq. New highs-new lows were 136-14 on the NYSE, and 147-31 on the Nasdaq.

declined on its results, while Xilinx

fell 4% after settling a dispute with Microsoft
rose 0.7% on analyst assertions that the company holds the early lead in on-demand computing.
hit another new 52-week high.
