Advancers led 20-12 on the NYSE, and 21-11 margin on the Nasdaq. Upside volume was 63% on the NYSE, and 80% on the Nasdaq. New highs-new lows were 425-2 on the NYSE, and 374-9 on the Nasdaq.

After the close, StorageTek jumped after raising guidance.

During the day, Broadcom and Juniper surged on positive analyst comments, and Juniper also benefited from a Singapore deal.

Manugistics soared 19% on an upgrade.
