The University of
Hong Kong has implemented Citrix’s
WinFrame application server to allow students at home or on
campus worktstations to have easier access to library resources.
“We were looking for a computing solution that would allow those legacy
CD-ROM databases to be accessed by our on-campus and remote students,” said
Dr. Ku Kam Ming, computer officer, Main Library, The University of Hong
Kong.
“The libraries have implemented a Citrix WinFrame application server
which enables students to access information from on-campus networked
workstations and from their homes using the University’s dial-up service to
access the same information through an Internet browser,” continued Ku.
“Previously, our users had to use an on-campus networked PC, running DOS or
Windows 3.1 only, to access Libraries’s CD-ROM databases,” added Ku. “Now,
our users may access these databases using Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows
NT, Macintosh,
and Unix environments.”
Florida-based Citrix’s WinFrame and MetaFrame servers allegedly permit
professionals to “package applications once and publish them anywhere” for
greater installation,
deployment and management control across the enterprise.
“In a very short period of time, our server-based computing solutions have
grown from single-server departmental deployments that address the needs of
remote users to strategic, enterprise-wide installations that help our
customers worldwide increase business value by simplifying their complex IT
environments,” said Nabeel Youakim, Asia Pacific managing director for
Citrix.
