Yahoo! Hits The Airwaves

Following other portals into the broadcast radio sector, Yahoo! Inc. Tuesday teamed up with broadcast.com and Spinner.com to launch a 10-channel live radio site, Yahoo! Radio.

The service is designed to provide users with direct access to audio programming 24 hours a day. Broadcast.com will provide hosting and streaming services for the site, and Spinner.com will provide the music programming, the firms said. No financial terms were disclosed.

The free site features programming channels such as alternative rock, classic rock, classical, country, celtic, electronica, jazz, oldies, rhythm & blues and the ’80s. Users can listen to a variety of music in real time. In addition, Yahoo! Radio provides a link to Yahoo Music, where they can find information about artists or music groups.

The move by Yahoo! follows portal site Lycos’ entry onto the radio airwaves via its Lycos Radio Network, launched last month.
Both services provide music channels, station identification and advertisements on their sites.

“Yahoo! Radio gives Yahoo! users a great new platform for listening to music on the Web,” said Erik Schwartz, Yahoo!’s senior producer.

“The combination of broadcast.com’s industry leadership and expertise in streaming media to
large-scale audiences and Spinner.com’s extensive experience in Internet
music programming brings Yahoo! users an enhanced online experience and
expansive entertainment all in an easy to use format.”

To access Yahoo’s service, users must register with Yahoo! and have Real Player G2.
