Community site operation GeoCities renewed its marketing agreement with book
and music retailer Amazon.com.
According to the agreement, GeoCities will provide Amazon.com with banner advertising and
merchandising placements throughout the site and participate in the Amazon.com
Associates program, which allows GeoCities members to sell Amazon.com videos,
CDs and books through their Web Sites. Financial arrangements were not
disclosed.
“We are delighted to continue our relationship with GeoCities,” said Ram
Shriram, vice president of business development for Amazon.com. “The whole
reason to shop online is that it is easier and more convenient, and this
arrangement allows GeoCities’ visitors to be just a click away from the
Amazon.com store.”
Based in Marina del Rey, CA, GeoCities users (the company calls them
Homesteaders) have created over 29 million pages of personalized content. In
October 1998, the GeoCities site generated more than 1.6 billion page views,
according to Nielsen I/PRO, and in December 1998, the site attracted 19
million unique visitors and is ranked the third most trafficked site on the
Internet, according to Media Metrix.
