Openwave Systems Inc. , which develops open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, said that Cox Communications has selected Openwave’s Email Mx messaging platform for use by Cox’s 779,000 residential Internet subscribers.

The pact’s financial details were not released.

With Openwave Email Mx, Cox can consolidate its services while providing the option to deploy services like instant messaging (IM) and multimedia messaging services (MMS), Openwave said in a statement.

Email Mx delivers carrier-class messaging with massive scalability, uncompromised performance and a host of features designed to ensure reliable operation, smooth administration and integration with existing systems and services, Openwave also said. The Email Mx platform includes WML (Wireless Markup Language) mail, SMS (Short Message Service) notification and support for emerging wireless standards.

Email Mx also has a carrier-scale LDAP directory, multimedia message store, and certified interoperability with telephony servers.

For the user, Email Mx “ensures a truly transparent subscriber experience regardless of the type of device (landline phone, wireless device, computer, etc.) used for access,” Openwave said.

Email Mx is a component of Openwave’s Messaging Services Platform, which is based on an open architecture and Internet standards. Operators can easily extend and adapt their services as their customer base grows and becomes more sophisticated. The platform and its applications are also designed to work with existing and future wireline and wireless networks.
