Synergy Sees WLAN Growth

Market research firm Synergy Research Group of Phoenix, AZ, has released new market analysis showing steady growth in the wireless local area network (WLAN) market place.

Worldwide WLAN equipment sales reached $450 million dollars in the first quarter of 2002. That’s up three percent from the end of last year, and up 55 percent from the first quarter of 2001.

Again concurring with information from In-Stat/MDR, Synergy says that WLAN sales for the enterprise were down from the end of last year (though up from the beginning of 2001).

The real growth is in home and SOHO WLAN equipment, with sales representing 55 percent of the entire WLAN market. Growth was 16 percent over the fourth quarter of 2001.

Companies leading the charge in the SOHO market for 2002 are Linksys, Buffalo Technologies, D-Link, Netgear, Actiontec, and SMC. All showed a growth of more than 15 percent since the last quarter. Linksys is now the number two overall WLAN vendor behind Cisco; Linksys had 14.5 percent of the overall market in the first quarter of 2002.

Enterprise market share is now lead by Cisco with 27.4 percent, followed by Agere (24.9%) and Symbol (11.5%).

Synergy collects data every ninety days from over 80 of the top equipment manufacturers, which is checked against public financial records, company commentary, and historical performance.
