Chipmaker Transmeta Monday said it has inked a deal to embed its low-power chips in a family of firewall products made by Taiwan-based IBASE Technology.
Santa Clara, Calif.-based Transmeta said its 800 MHz Crusoe TM5800 will power the FWA7000, a fast and fan-less Firewall/VPN platform. The company says the chip’s speed makes it ideal for use in 802.11b
“We find that Transmeta’s platform consistently runs cooler than competitive offerings, resulting in high reliability and a long product life span,” said IBASE president C.S. Lin.
The company said the fan-less environment comes courtesy of its “LongRun” power management technology, which the Crusoe uses to adjust voltage and clock frequency on demand, reducing overall power consumption.
The firewall is currently available and comes with four on-board Ethernet ports and supports Disk On Module (DOM) via an integrated IDE
While its Crusoe chips have been the mainstay of 12-inch and under sub-notebooks, Transmeta has been steadily working on putting its marquee chips in a myriad of non-PC devices.
Earlier this month, the company forged a partnership with German-based VoiceCom AG for its speech-controlled telephone dialing system, known as VoiceButler.
Current product offerings from IBASE include several Transmeta-based single board computers (SBCs), CompactPCI processor boards, ETX processor module, embedded little boards, industrial motherboards and many ODM custom designs.
