Acer Ships Centrino Tablet PC

Acer America, a subsidiary of Taiwan’s
Acer, Thursday launched a Tablet PC based on Intel’s Centrino technology.

The TravelMate
C110
, like its predecessor, the C100, is a convertible-style tablet, meaning
that its display swivels around to fold over the keyboard, so that it can
function either as a conventional laptop or a tablet. The device includes
Intel’s ultra-low-voltage 900MHz Pentium M processor, along with its 855 chipset
and 802.11b chip. The TravelMate also features built-in Bluetooth support.

The 3.2-pound tablet features a 10.4-inch XGA display and two USB 2.0 ports.
The C110 starts at $1899 for 512MB of memory and a 30GB hard drive, and will
ship with the Zinio Reader, software that displays digital versions of magazines
on a PC.

Other Tablet PC makers are also readying their Centrino-based tablets. Motion
Computing is expected to launch a slate-style tablet using the wireless
technology next week. Panasonic has also announced
a rugged Tablet PC
using the Centrino bundle.

Tablet PC shipments reached more than 72,000 units in the fourth quarter of
2002, and are expected to grow considerably in 2003, according to IDC. Acer and
Hewlett-Packard led the way, each shipping about 17,000 of their respective
tablets.
