Comcast Cable Communications said Tuesday it will become the latest broadband provider to offer in-home networking capabilities.
Comcast said it would work with Intel to develop and distribute home residential gateway and networking products to its subscribers. The products support both 802.11b wireless and Ethernet networks.
Comcast is the third largest cable operator in the U.S.
“Home networking will move Comcast customers one step closer to our vision of the broadband-enabled house,” said David Juliano, senior vice president and general manager of Comcast’s Online division.
Intel initially supported the HomeRF wireless networking standard but announced earlier this year that its future home networking products will support 802.11b. A growing number of other broadband providers, including EarthLink, are starting to offer in-home networking in an effort to spur adoption of broadband.
