Intel Corp.’s President and COO Paul Otellini, speaking at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WINHEC) yesterday, announced the company’s vision for the integration and convergence of communications and mobile computing platforms. Intel’s Banias platform, which is the current name for its future mobile platform, was demonstrated publicly for the first time. The Banias platform is expected to make its public debut in the first half of 2003. The platform is expected to concretize the paradigm shift envisioned by Intel in the move away from the notion that performance and innovation are measured by sheer processing power. Banias systems will be 802.11-enabled. The new concept is that communications and computing are inseparable, and that the devices built to perform such functions will be optimized for both – including longer battery life, thinner and lighter form factors, and seamless wireless connectivity.
