Telecom giant Sprint yesterday announced that it has signed a multiyear, multimillion dollar agreement with Ohio’s Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) to provide that institution with an upgraded communications infrastructure, including a WLAN.

Sprint and Cisco Systems announced a collaborative agreement in December, 2001 and CWRU will utilize infrastructure provided by the companies to build-out its wired and wireless campus networks.

CWRU will deploy a Cisco switched Gigabit Ethernet to the desktop solution across the entire campus. CWRU will turn to Sprint to deploy a Cisco, combined 802.11a+b solution, designed with laptop and other mobile users in mind.

The move by Sprint is indicative of the growing trend among telecoms to expand their services to include wireless LAN products.
