Nokia’s Latest WAN/WLAN Card Introduced

Nokia yesterday introduced a dual-mode GPRS/WLAN PC card called the D311. The company claims that it is the first such dual mode card for the Americas.

The D311 GPRS WLAN PC card operates in the GSM 850/1900 network space, offering GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) coverage and WLAN coverage.

In GPRS mode the card offers connection speeds of up to 40.2 kbps, and for 802.11b, throughput of up to 11 Mbps. Nokia stated that the card has a simple user interface with user-defined profiles, obviating the need for re-configuring for every connection type.

Nokia also said the D311 is compatible with a type II or III PC card slot, on machines runnng Win 98/SE, Me, 2000, XP, Win CE 3.0, and Linux. The card is also compatible with VPN clients over GPRS and WLAN networks.

Nokia said that shipments are expected to begin during the third quarter of 2002.
