Symbol Unveils Upgraded Pocket PC

Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: SBL) Tuesday unveiled an upgraded Pocket PC-based handheld with built-in support for wireless local area networks (WLANs).

The ruggedized PPT 2800 is the second Pocket PC device introduced by Symbol in the last month. It also makes devices based on the Palm OS. Symbol’s devices are aimed at manufacturing and industrial applications.

Besides WLAN support, the PPT 2800 also supports wireless wide area networks and bar code scanning. The new device has a 206Mhz Intel StrongARM SA1100 microprocessor, 32MB of RAM and a quarter-VGA display. It is ruggedized to withstand multiple drops onto concrete from as high as four feet.
