New Handheld Supports WLANs

Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: SBL) Wednesday announced a new Pocket PC handheld that supports connections to 802.11 and 802.11b wireless local area networks (WLANs).

Besides WLAN support, the Pocket PC-based PDT 8100 handheld supports both keypad and pen-based input, according to the company. It is ruggedized to withstand multiple four-foot drops to concrete as well as extreme weather conditions.

The company said it is aiming PDT 8100 at vertical markets such as package delivery, healthcare and logistics. Besides its Windows CE devices, Symbol also develops devices based on the Palm OS.
