Symantec on Wednesday announced the latest wrinkle in
its e-mail security program.
The computer security software vendor launched Hosted Mail Security, a
comprehensive set of services designed to protect businesses against spam and
viruses.
The anti-spam and anti-virus technologies within the offering provide
server-based software, gateway appliances and software protection,
according to the company.
“Multiple threat defenses, such as anti-spam, anti-virus and content
filtering, combined with the easy management and deployment benefits
inherent in a hosted solution, dramatically reduce the total cost of
ownership associated with e-mail security,” Enrique Salem, senior vice
president of security products, said in a statement.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based security firm said Hosted Mail Security
includes BrightMail anti-spam technology plus Symantec AntiVirus
technologies. A policy-based filtering control allows for attachment blocking, subject
and message body filtering, and encrypted file handling to protect against
zero-day attacks and prevent the loss of confidential data.
The program also offers a Web-based administrative console that enables
administrators to remotely establish and manage policies, according to the company. It can perform user
and domain administration, and it runs multiple detailed activity reports.
The latest offering from Symantec joins a flurry of providers
rolling out hosted e-mail with more security features.
Research firm Radicati Group recently found that hosted e-mail is
growing at a faster pace than in-sourced e-mail. The firm estimated that there are 39 million
hosted and managed e-mail services accounts, accounting for more than 67 percent of all e-mail accounts. By 2008, Radicati expects the market to hit 59 million
accounts, a 51 percent increase.
