Internet music service provider MP3.com Inc. made its first foray into the brave new mobile world Wednesday with the launch of MP3.com Wireless Live Events Calendar 1.0.
MP3.com said the application, accessible by WAP-enabled mobile phones at wap.mp3.com, is the first mobile-ready application for finding and purchasing tickets to live entertainment events. The company said the application will enable mobile phone users all over the world to find local live events in any country, contact venues, make reservations and purchase tickets directly from their phones.
MP3.com’s digital artists, using a simple Web interface, will enter their event information, including venue, time, address, ticketing details, phone number and other information. This will update the Live Events Calendar on the MP3.com site as well as the wireless site.
But listing live events isn’t everything. MP3.com sees big things on the horizon for wireless music.
“This is only the tip of the iceberg,” said Shawn Conahan, director of wireless services at MP3.com. “Music is a killer app for wireless networks that we will leverage as wireless bandwidth increases. Our product roadmap will free users from their PCs and create potential revenue opportunities for MP3.com’s MSP partners.”
The company promises a demonstration of a complete wireless music experience by leading technology vendors at the MP3 Summit 2000 scheduled for June 20-21 in San Diego.
