PictureTel Corporation Monday announced that it has entered into a wide band audio license arrangement with Nortel Networks.
The companies have licensed to each other the patents which each party holds to International Telecommunications Union (ITU-T) standards G.722 and G.722.1. Nortel Networks will also be licensed under PictureTel’s Siren broadband audio technology.
PictureTel’s patented Siren wideband audio compression algorithm is an enabler for audio conferencing, videoconferencing, Voice over IP, and Internet streaming. Siren was chosen by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) as the new international standard (G.722.1) for audio coding.
The new G.722.1 standard provides 7 kHz of audio bandwidth at bit rates of 24 and 32 kbps, which is more than double the quality of a telephone call.
