There is at least one Turkey predicted to survive this Thanksgiving and thanks to the Internet “Gloria Gobbler” could possibly be around for several more.
During the past few weeks, an estimated 30 million people have viewed American Greetings’ Thanksgiving turkey eCard featuring Gloria performing a parody of a familiar disco classic, making it the most popular eCard in American Greetings’ history, according to Sally Babcock, senior vice president of AG Interactive, the new media subsidiary of American Greetings.
“We know eCard’s with animals are big and cards with singing animals are even bigger,” Babcock said.
With a seventies afro, and belting out her own version of Gloria Gaynor’s “I will Survive,” the flightless bird has been flying around the Internet bringing a good deal of traffic to its creators at AmericanGreetings.com, according to company executives.
The eCard has seen a consistent 1000 percent increase in traffic over the past few weeks, dancing its way across millions of computer screens, according to Babcock. Traffic has consistently hit millions of views each day for several weeks and is expected to hit 3 million a day today and Thanksgiving.
Of course, greeting-card companies always look for hot-gimmick cards to gobble up more sales with each holiday. This Thanksgiving, however, an editor hit the mark when delivering the bird, likely stuffing company pockets as millions of new eyes made their way to the Web site.
American Greetings tracks views through its subscription service while monitoring the number of users who pay to join, as well as those who purchase a subscription from the eCard.
Views of the eCard over the next few days are expected to pass even more milestones as millions of viewers receive the card this holiday season.
In fact, American Greetings estimates one in 10 Americans have seen Gloria protesting Thanksgiving.
Gloria is also available as a ringtone and wallpaper for mobile phones.
American Greetings is expecting a rise in the number of eCards this holiday season, with 50 percent of survey respondents planning to send 10 or more e-cards, up from 38 percent last year, the company said.
The survey, conducted by AG Interactive, the company’s media subsidiary, found that 80 percent of 6,000 survey respondents plan to send at least one e-card this holiday season.
