Facebook Messages, the Next Step Beyond Email?

Yahoo Mail, Gmail, Hotmail, etc. Does the world need another email system? Facebook’s answer is yes and no.


Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg showed off a new communication system for Facebook users at a high profile media event in San Francisco. But contrary to preliminary media reports, Facebook insists its new Facebook Messages shouldn’t be viewed as a new email system because it works quite differently than traditional email systems and collects and displays more than just email communications. Datamation has the skinny on what Facebook is doing to eliminate what it says is the friction of standard email.




SAN FRANCISCO

Facebook showed off a new messaging system that aims to give users quick access to emails and other communications like instant messaging in a unified way that stores a complete history of individual online conversations.

Facebook Messages is being rolled out over the next month to Facebook users who now have the option to get a new @facebook.com email address. Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg said his company has been working on the project for over a year.
