Adaptec has acquired a German data protection firm from Intel.

ICP vortex Computersysteme GmbH, a provider of data protection products for European customers, had been an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Intel since March 2001. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal is part of Intel’s continuing effort to focus more on its core silicon business.

Based in Germany, ICP vortex provides a broad range of hardware and software RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) data protection solutions for SCSI, Serial ATA (SATA), and Fibre Channel disk drive arrays. The company’s products are sold to major original equipment manufacturers and through value-added resellers.

Adaptec plans to continue the ICP vortex operation in Europe, complementing Adaptec’s other offerings for storage connectivity, data protection, storage networking, and external storage.

“The ICP vortex brand is among the most recognized and trusted brands for data protection in Germany and across Europe, and we’re pleased to add the ICP vortex team to our global operation,” says Ahmet Houssein, vice president and general manager of Adaptec’s Storage Solutions Group. “ICP vortex’s capabilities further extend Adaptec’s strength in delivering end-to-end storage infrastructure — from core data protection technology to turnkey networked storage solutions — to our customers worldwide.”

ICP (Intelligent Computer Peripherals) vortex was founded in 1990 and is headquartered in Neckarsulm, Germany.
