CommVault, one of the biggest private storage vendors, has thrown its hat into the continuous data protection (CDP) ring with the latest version of its QiNetix data protection suite.
In what CommVault says is the first of three major QiNetix upgrades this quarter, the company took the wraps off its new ContinuousDataReplicator (CDR) software Tuesday. CDR, aimed at remote offices and data centers that are being consolidated for disaster recovery purposes, continuously captures changes in enterprise applications and remote office data, CommVault says.
CommVault says its offering stands out from the pack because of its tight integration with the company’s Unified Data Management platform and the full QiNetix suite. The platform shares job and media management, security, policy management, index and a common browser interface, and the full product suite offers backup and recovery, hierarchical storage management (HSM), e-mail archiving and compliance, replication, storage resource management and service level management and reporting.
CDR is a byte-level host-based solution, CommVault says, while competitors use block-level technology to transfer data. Byte-level support simplifies remote office backup and data center disaster recovery procedures, the company says.
“CDP is the most talked about thing this storage season, but most of the rhetoric is just that,” said Steve Duplessie, founder and senior analyst at the Enterprise Strategy Group. “The CommVault offering provides a legitimate value across the entire enterprise, from data center to remote branches, and everywhere in between. This is the kind of implementation that will give CDP a good name.”
Administrators can choose to replicate entire volumes, or select folders or individual directories within a single volume. CDR is “wide area network (WAN) friendly,” offering scheduled bandwidth throttling to meet network operations needs. The CDP product also offers full integration with key applications such as SQL and Exchange.
