CommVault, which competes with Veritas Software and
Computer Associates in the storage software space, has
launched a new wave of data management software to help customers store and
retrieve data.
In a testament to the information lifecycle management (ILM) trend, the
company’s revamped QiNetix suite allows administrators to place data on the appropriate storage medium by matching cost, access and recoverability to service levels.
other unstructured data are maxing out storage gear’s capabilities and fraying administrators’ nerves.
Beside back-up, the new QiNetix software provides point-in-time replication,
hierarchical storage management, archival and compliance, storage resource
management and service level management from one console, said Larry
Cormier, vice president of marketing and business development.
Its components share policy management and event managers on the front end,
and distributed metadata indexes, media management and copy management on
the back end. Conversely, with products from Veritas, EMC or CA, users would
have to perform those functions with several different software products,
which are not integrated.
“We took a clean sheet of paper and designed from the ground up a unified
management approach,” Cormier said. “Each of those [rivals’] products provide
a view into the data they are handling. Each require almost a separate
vault or back end for the data they are managing. CommVault can provide a
single view of all of those copies of data in one pane of glass.”
Enterprise Strategy Group analysts believe CommVault’s unified approach to
data management is indeed ahead of the larger rivals.
“CommVault is the only vendor on the market that has developed an integrated
solution from the ground up that marries backup and recovery capability with
storage management solutions in order to deliver end to end data
management,” said ESG analyst Nancy Hurley in a recent brief. “As users
begin to understand the true benefits of an integrated data management
solution, we expect CommVault will have a great deal of success expanding
their footprint.”
Improvements new to QiNetix include faster recovery time from individual
files to full applications; a new feature to simplify administration of data
protection operations; integration with Network Appliance’s SnapVault for
faster protection of data; and one-touch restore for speedy recovery.
New ILM functions include advanced content indexing search
features; automated re-migration and indexing of personal archive files in
QiNetix DataArchiver; better
support for addressable storage devices EMC Centera and NetApp SnapLock; and
automated data migration support for NAS filers in QiNetix DataMigrator.
Moreover, the new QiNetix lets users create, manage and synchronize data
copies with multiple retention requirements. Data copies can be migrated
through a tiered storage environment via policies to satisfy retention and
availability requirements.
QiNetix’ unified platform was designed for high-end Windows, Unix, Linux,
VMware, NetWare and Lotus Notes environments, said Cormier. New QiNetix
software will be available this month with component pricing starting at
$795.
