Adaptec, Inc. today introduced iROC, a RAID solution that runs on standard Ultra160 and Ultra320 SCSI ASICs and host adapters. According to the company, iROC offers hardware RAID levels 0, 1, and 1/0, allowing users to access their data even in the event of a hard disk failure.
Adaptec says iROC is unique in that it offers high-end RAID features and functionality previously available only with dedicated RAID hardware. These features include hot swap and hot spare support with auto-recovery of a failed drive, check-pointing, and remote management through Adaptec’s storage management software. With Ultra320, the embedded RISC processor on the SCSI ASIC performs the mirroring function, reducing the load on the host CPU and improving PCI and PCI-X bus utilization. Adaptec’s advanced mirroring is an ideal solution for IT managers who need boot protection, but are accustomed to full-featured hardware RAID solutions.
iROC will be available this Fall with Adaptec’s ASC-29160 and ASC-39160 Ultra160 SCSI controllers, and for those that want to integrate basic RAID functionality onto their motherboard, Adaptec’s Ultra160 AIC-7899W ASIC. iROC will also be offered on Adaptec’s Ultra320 line when that line becomes available.
making RAID more affordable, accessible and easy-to-use.
