Looking to add more capacity to next generation mobile devices, QUALCOMM Tuesday inked a deal with flash memory card maker SanDisk

As part of the agreement, San Diego-based QUALCOMM said it will support removable miniSD and SD cards in its Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipset family beginning with the MSM6100 and expanding to the MSM6250, MSM6275, MSM6300 and MSM6500 chipsets.
The company said adding miniSD/SD card memory capabilities lets consumers store digital photos, navigational maps, audio and video clips, games, music and other entertainment and business-related files in a variety of downloadable file formats on their SD-enabled wireless devices.
“The collaboration between QUALCOMM’s chipsets and SanDisk’s storage solutions will increase the convenience of storing information on 3G CDMA wireless devices,” QUALCOMM vice president of product management Luis Pineda said in a statement.
Sunnyvale, Calif.-based storage giant SanDisk said it “worked closely with QUALCOMM to facilitate this enhancement.” The company’s miniSD is a thumbnail-sized flash memory card capable of storage capacities of 16MB, 32MB and 64MB. The card is electrically and software compatible with the existing SD standard. It uses the same SD interface, including security features for content protection (CPRMContent Protection Rights Management) as the standard SD card. The company says the best part of the miniSD is that it lets manufacturers use their current SD-based designs with no changes to software or electronics.
“Manufacturers using QUALCOMM chipsets with built-in SanDisk SD interface can lower product design time and reduce costs, and having SD or miniSD cards in the phone offers consumers a more personalized range of storage capacity options,” said SanDisk vice president Bo Ericsson.
QUALCOMM’s MSM6xxx chipsets and corresponding systems support the company’s Launchpad brand of applications to provide high-quality stereo audio, high-resolution in-phone cameras, video recorder/players, 3D graphics for gaming, and high-accuracy location tracking. The MSM6xxx family also includes QUALCOMM’s Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless (BREW)
