Redback Networks Inc., a provider of next-generation metro broadband and optical networking equipment, today introduced the SmartEdge(TM) 800 Router, which the company said is designed for the delivery of highly available IP services.
According to Redback, the SmartEdge 800 Router is targeted at IP edge aggregation, as well as hosting and network-based storage sites, and can be deployed for backbone core applications, since core routing is a subset of edge aggregation.
Georges Antoun, senior vice president of marketing and product management at Redback Networks, said, “the product is distinguished by a number of features for service providers focused on delivering highly reliable IP services today, while maintaining total unique programmability to support new IP services in the future. It provides high-density access termination — leased line, ATM and Frame Relay to maximize revenue per rack; as well as dense high-speed interfaces for trunking, wholesale, and backbone applications.”
Redback said the SmartEdge 800 Router is currently being evaluated at 15 service providers worldwide. Three of these service providers have made initial purchases with plans to use the SmartEdge Router in their production networks in the future.
