STORServer to Serve up Three New Backup Appliances

STORServer, a manufacturer of all-in-one enterprise backup appliances, has announced a new line of disk-to-disk Backup Appliances featuring modular disk technology from Nexsan, a provider of disk based storage solutions.

STORServer will now offer a “D-Series” line of appliances, which will feature three new disk-to-disk-to-tape Backup Appliances — the D10000, the D20000 and the D30000. Nexsan will provide its 2 Terabyte ATAboy2 modular disk subsystem for STORServer’s new line of disk-based backup appliances, making the new D-Series an additional option to STORServer’s existing integrated offerings.

“Our integrated Nexsan storage arrays allows us to offer low-cost, high capacity disk offerings as a viable option for both low-end and mid-range applications,” says STORServer President John Pearring, “and gives us the ability to offer both tape and disk copy options for the online storage pool. Disaster recovery copies of backup and archive pools can also be offered on either tape or disk.”

The D10000 model is designed for customers who want to protect 340 to 690 Gbyte of data. The D20000 model scales from 340 Gbyte to a 2.8 Tbyte environment, and the D30000 grows from 690 Gbyte to 5.6 Tbytes of customer data.

All three models come with a tape drive (or optional tape library) for creating off-site disaster recovery tapes. With the backup appliance, STORServer only needs to capture daily changed data. Only two or three DR tapes are typically created each day. If a customer requires electronic vaulting, or online archiving, additional libraries and/or disk pools can be attached to the D Series Appliances.

With the ATAboy2 modular disk from Nexsan customers can grow their online pool in 2 Tbyte increments. As in any STORServer appliance, the online pool comes configured with data retention for expired files set at 45 days. Customers can shorten or lengthen the data retention to their own requirements for any file, group of files, etc.

“Nexsan’s disk-based storage technology allows STORServer to capitalize on the performance, reliability and affordability of disk backup solutions,” says Brendan Kinkade, Nexsan’s vice president of marketing. “STORServer customers will have the opportunity to easily scale up in 2 Terabyte increments as their data needs grow, without ROI sacrifice, at an extremely attractive price point.”

“The great thing for our customers is that the new D-Series gives customers an affordable disk pool option,” says Pearring. “STORServer has always been able to offer disk-based online backup pools, and has always backed up first to a disk cache for daily changes. But the online data retention pool, holding all files a customer wants to restore, has historically resided only on tape. Nexsan’s story is a good one,” he continues. “Many customers see advantages for storing all their data copies on disk, and the Nexsan offerings make disk both affordable and reliable.”
