Sun Commits to Service Providers

Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced it is strengthening its commitment to the Service Provider community by extending the SunTone(SM) Certification and Branding Program and introducing new initiatives to help companies architect, build, certify and go-to-market with Web-enabled services that meet high industry standards.

According to the company, at the company’s SunTone + iForce Service Provider Conference in Santa Clara, Calif. tomorrow, it will demonstrate its commitment with a new SunTone Certification for storage services, SunTone configurations, SunTone Services for Service Providers and new go-to-market programs for companies with SunTone certified solutions.

New SunTone Certification for Storage Services certifies a Storage Service Provider’s primary, secondary and back-up/recovery services. The first two companies to achieve SunTone certification for storage services are Arsenal Digital Solutions for its Managed Disk and Backup & Restore services and StorageNetworks for its DataPACS(SM), NetPACS(SM), BackPACS(SM), SafePACS(SM) and STORmanage(SM) data storage management services.

SunTone certification is awarded in three areas: Service Provider services, hosted applications and integrator services. More than 175 companies alone have applied for Certification for Integrator Services which opened recently in October. The first SunTone Certified Integrator Services include: Amdahl’s Infracare Customized Client Services, Qwest’s Customer Support Services/Integration Services and XOR’s Managed Service Offering.

Led by Sun, SunTone Certification is one of the industry’s first collaborative efforts to define and audit Service Provider infrastructure, operational practices, hardware, applications and overall service delivery to help ensure industry-leading levels for performance, security and availability. The program, with its SunTone certified “seal of approval,” gives customers of Web-enabled services a means for identifying suppliers that meet defined high standards.
