Apache Group Creates Foundation

The Apache Group Thursday created the Apache Software Foundation to direct the development
of the Apache HTTP Server Project and other projects under the Apache
umbrella.

Apache is a non-profit corporation providing organizational
assistance and development frameworks through an international volunteer
effort for the Apache open-source projects, including the world’s leading
Web server. The Apache Web Server captured more than 58% of the Web Server
market last month according to ServerWatch.

The Apache Software Foundation aims to provide organizational, legal, and
financial support for the Apache open-source software projects. The
foundation monitors the continuity of Apache projects beyond the
participation of individual volunteers, enables contributions of
intellectual property and financial support on a sound basis, and provides
a vehicle for limiting legal exposure while participating in open-source
projects.

Although the foundation will oversee all Apache activities, the technical
aspects of each project will be governed by its own project team. The ASF
requires that all its projects remain open to new contributors via Internet
collaboration and limits the distribution of software under its name to a
set of approved open-source licenses, but does not interfere with the
day-to-day operations of each project.

The members of the Apache Software Foundation have elected a board to oversee the corporation and ensure its responsiveness to the
needs of its projects. The board is comprised of widely-recognized
contributors to the original Apache Group:
