NEW YORK — In a marriage of popular open-source software providers, MySQL will bundle its database server with the application server of JBoss Group to make the deployment of applications more fluid.
Financial arrangements of the deal were not revealed, but the companies will jointly market JBoss Group professional services and MySQL AB products and services, both main revenue sources for the companies, which announced the alliance at LinuxWorld in New York City Wednesday.
JBoss Group plans to make its Java-based application server easy to install with MySQL’s database server family, which includes the company’s flagship database, and MaxDB by MySQL, the enterprise-class database product the company developed with Germany’s SAP.
MySQL and JBoss are both committed to providing integrated solutions along with the professional services and support required to make low-cost, reliable open source software more appealing to customers, he added.
Sweden’s MySQL and Atlanta’s JBoss offer their products as low-cost alternatives to products from database and middleware makers such as IBM and Oracle.
The companies offer their products free and rely on services for revenues.
Both MySQL’s and JBoss’ flagship products have been downloaded more than four million times, highlighting the interest in opens-source products to handle enterprise applications in small businesses or departments of large companies.
MySQL CEO Marten Mickos told internetnews.com both companies’ commitment to open-source technology made the pairing a natural.
“JBoss has a strong developer following and increasingly we see it being used within production environments,” Mickos said.
“Tight integration of JBoss and MySQL will only push open source deeper in the enterprise and provide enterprises with even greater peace of mind,” said Marc Fleury, president and founder of JBoss Group.
MySQL and JBoss have already tested out their relationship with some customers, including Sterling Commerce and LeapFrog Enterprises.
MySQL issued additional news Wednesday, including a partnership with Zend Technologies and the introduction of a new open source tool with a graphical user interface (GUI).
Similar to its deal with JBoss, MySQL will work with PHP Web scripting designer Zend to improve productivity in deploying Web applications with its open source database.
The companies will boost compatibility and integration between the MySQL database and Zend’s PHP products to make it easier for businesses to use complete open source software stacks, such as the LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP).
MySQL AB and Zend are also offering partner products to their respective customers. Zend Studio and Zend Encoder can now be purchased from MySQL and a commercial license for the MySQL database server can now be purchased from the Zend Web site.
As the first in what the company said will be a long line of database management tools, MySQL’s new software tool is geared to help IT administrators manage and monitor MySQL database servers.
MySQL Administrator integrates database management and maintenance into a single environment, with a clean GUI. With the tool, database administrators can more easily configure servers, manage user administration and monitor database health. Backup and restore and log management can also be performed through the GUI.
Available for Microsoft Windows and Linux, MySQL Administrator will be available for download from the MySQL AB Web site at by the early second quarter.
