Sun Microsystems Inc.
Monday released its new “Jini” Java-based networking technology that
enables instant network connectivity using many different electronic devices.

Jini enables the creation of a universal network that users are able to
connect to using a variety of different electronic devices. Compatible
devices currently being developed include computers, printers, disk drives,
phones and cameras. Sun believes that in the future, Jini will support
applications which range from mainframe computers to smart cards the size
of a credit card.

Sun intends to make it as easy to add an electronic device to a network as
it is to plug in a cordless phone. The company feels that as new wireless
networks become more commonplace, the devices won’t even require a phone
plug, as they will automatically connect to a Jini network as they are
switched on.
