Sun Microsystems Inc. this week
released the Sun Developer Essentials Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition CD.
The product is designed to provide developers with one-stop shopping for
development tools, specifications, and documentation. The CD is Sun’s
attempt to expand its Developer Connection Program, and it is geared toward
developers of applications for high-volume consumer appliances.
Sun (SUNW) is making the CD available as a technology access resource to developers enrolled in the Sun Developer Essentials subscription program. It
can also be purchased for a nominal fee.
The contents of the Sun Developer Essentials CD draw from the Java 2
Platform, Micro Edition, a highly optimized Java runtime environment that
targets a wide range of consumer products, including pagers, cellular
phones, screenphones, digital set-top boxes, and car navigation systems. The
recently released Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition addresses the needs of
developers for small footprint devices.
Among the technologies contained in the CD are: PersonalJava technology,
Java Embedded Server software, Java Card technology, Jini Connection
technology, K Virtual Machine, and Java TV technology.
The CD also includes select third-party tools that complement Sun’s own
technology and help provide a comprehensive solution, a statement issued by
the company said.
The Sun Developer Essentials program is part of the Sun Developer Connection program.
It provides valuable packages of Sun products, development tools, and early
access to software delivered through an affordable yearly software
subscription.
The Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition CD is available as a two-year
subscription, updated semiannually. It is priced at $39.95. Updates are
automatic, providing developers with the latest software and
information.
