FAST Search Inks Elsevier

Jan 14, 2003

Expanding and extending a previous relationship, Fast Search & Transfer (FAST), a search engine technology specialist, has signed a five-year contract with Elsevier, an online and off-line publisher of scientific, technical and medical journals.

Under terms of the pact, FAST’s Data Search, a scalable real-time search platform for enterprise as well as Web search, will be used in a range of Elsevier properties.

FAST, which is based in Oslo, Norway and has U.S. operations in Massachusetts, will also provide full-time technical assistance and customization work for Elsevier.

“FAST Data Search was the only enterprise search solution that could provide us with a highly scalable solution for retrieving the most relevant and up-to-date information from our vast collection of scientific data,” said Tony Coorey, Elsevier’s CIO.

Elsevier’s store of searchable data is expansive. The company, which is based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, publishes more than 1,800 journals and 2,200 new books per year, in addition to databases, online reference works and subject-specific portals.

Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.
