Intel moved beyond its core semiconductor business and acquired Sarvega, a leader in XML and Web services performance optimization. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.

Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.-based Sarvega has products designed to accelerate the processing of XML workloads, increase network and XML firewall security, and reduce system management overhead.

Command Center is a drag-and-drop policy software platform that can configure, deploy and manage Sarvega XML Guardian Gateway appliances individually, or as a cluster.

Command Center provides administrators the ability to provision a Web service based on its WSDL and allows them to write a default security policy for Web services.

“This acquisition supports our strategy to deliver added value to Intel’s computing platforms with products that will help our customers implement end-to-end XML solutions,” Richard Wirt, corporate vice president and general manager of Intel’s software and solutions group, in a statement.

Demand for XML-based solutions is growing as it addresses interoperability within the data center and across multiple institutions, including security and network traffic routing needs not currently addressed by IP-based networks.

XML-based Internet and corporate network traffic will grow from 15 percent in 2004 to almost 50 percent in 2008, according to projections released last November by the research firm ZapThink.

As part of the deal, Sarvega employees will join the Intel Software and Solutions Group, and the current Sarvega product line will continue to be available and fully supported.
