CMGI-owned AltaVista Co. Wednesday bought online
navigation firm Transium Corp.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Transium will become part of the newly-formed AltaVista Business Solutions
Group
, which offers global Net search services to e-commerce and portal
sites. Transium is AltaVista’s latest step in offering search solutions to
e-commerce companies, portals and global enterprises.

AltaVista will use this technology to create and host a custom index of a
company’s Web site or other content and to provide quick, relevant search
results to its users.

This solution is expected to be especially attractive to fast-growing
companies that need a customized search solution, or to vertical portals
that want to provide information to their customers.

“Transium’s hosted search technology helps companies to realize a more rapid
return on investment, with no additional internal resources required to
implement and support the application,” said Paul Sutter, chief executive
officer of Transium Corp. “This strategic acquisition will create a powerful
search solution with the benefits of custom hosted services.”

Transium provides develops and hosts Web search services for Yahoo! (YHOO), Intuit (INTU)and Office.com.

AltaVista became the child of CMGI (CMGI)
last June after the EcoNet paid Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) $2.3 billion for the search engine. AltaVista has since gone on to make a number of content deals with companies such as HealthCentral.com and DoubleClick Inc. (DCLK).
