Brazilian Internet Users Prefer E-Mail

Brazilian Netizens’ primary goal on the Internet is to send and receive e-mail, according to an online survey conducted by free e-mail site ZipMail and ad agency F/Nazca.

The two companies claim that the survey is the first research collected on the habits and behavior of Brazilian Internet users.

According ZipMail and F/Nazca research, 87 percent of Brazilians Netizens use the Internet to send and receive e-mail; 29 percent use the Internet for research and entertainment.

More than three fourths (76%) of survey respondents said they prefer to visit Portuguese language sites.

Over half (54%) spend time in chat rooms; 50 percent read magazines online and 45 percent listen to music.

ZipMail, Latin America’s largest free e-mail site, is presented entirely in Portuguese. The service boasts 1.6 million users, or more than a third of the country’s entire online population.

The IDC estimates that 2.7 Brazilians were online in 1998, and the research firm expects that number to rise to 3.8 by the end of this year.

The survey, which involved 7,574 participants, was held on the ZipMail site from May 15 to June 30.
