Taking a step away from its mobile phone focus, Ericsson Tuesday launched an online community site specifically for current and former employees.

Zopps, set to launch Oct. 1, is designed to keep those involved with Ericsson connected online. The company estimates it has potential user base of more than 250,000.

Features include chats, discussion forums, e-mail, user-created clubs and a Zopps pager that offers instant messaging. The site also offers its members discounts at selected online stores.

“Zopps is a good example of how Ericsson is utilizing new media to educate and communicate with our employees,” says Johan Ljungqvist, director of Internal Communications at Ericsson. “These types of applications strengthen Ericsson’s position as a world leader in the IT arena.”
