Excite Inc. and Punch Networks Corp. Monday announced they will offer a co-branded file sharing and collaboration service to visitors to Excite’s portal site.
WebGroups is designed to allow users to instantly store, share and update files using a Web browser.
A WebGroup is a private page on a secure Web site in which collections of users can securely store files they wish to share using just their browser. Other Webgroup members are notified of changes by e-mail, so all members are kept updated of its status.
The site is password-protected and files are encrypted on the server to ensure
security, the companies said. Because the service is Web-based, users can access their files from
any Internet-enabled machine.
“At one time or another, we’ve all experienced the frustrations of trying to share
files with others,” said Dan Campi, president and chief executive officer of Punch Networks.
“Our product makes file sharing easy by automating many of the associated
tasks such as version tracking, edit control, change notification and audit
trails.
