Gateway’s Mobile Wireless Lab Brings Computers to Schools

Gateway, Inc. today announced it has built a Mobile Wireless Lab that combines all the computers and technology needed to outfit an entire classroom. With the Mobile Wireless Lab, students have access to the technology they need to collaborate on assignments, create multimedia presentations, and access information on the Internet.

Schools can easily share technology resources from classroom to classroom or even from building to building. The Mobile Wireless Lab eliminates the need for a dedicated computer classroom, saving valuable space and money. The Mobile Wireless Lab provides high-speed wireless network access and the ability to recharge the notebook computers. The lab’s compact size and locking doors make it easy to store securely in a locked closet on campus.

According to Dick Callahan, Gateway’s vice president of education strategy and development, “To succeed in today’s digital world, students must have access to technology and use it regularly to enhance their learning experience. Our Mobile Wireless Lab helps schools stretch their dollars and reach more students by giving them a powerful computer lab that is portable, space-saving, and more secure than traditional computer lab environments.”

Gateway’s Mobile Wireless Lab includes 16 Gateway Solo notebook PCs and wireless PC cards, a mobile cart, a wireless access point with wireless PC Card, and a surge protector. For schools with limited IT support, Gateway technicians will also go to the school to install the mobile lab. Gateway offers three preconfigured mobile lab solutions to meet each school’s requirements for performance and value.

The wireless technology makes the Mobile Wireless Computer Lab flexible, cost-effective, and easy to install. The wireless Ethernet LAN is based on the popular 802.11b standard with data transfer rates of up to 11 megabytes per second for file sharing and fast access to multimedia-rich web sites and data stored on school servers.

All of the Mobile Wireless Computer Lab solutions offer various support options during and after installation. Gateway’s on-site installation service includes assembling the mobile cart, installing the notebooks and access point, and verifying the systems function properly. Schools can obtain extended warranties, accidental damage protection, express repair and return service, and critical loaner service from service centers in more than 280 Gateway Country stores.

San Diego-based Gateway (www.gateway.com), a Fortune 250 company founded in 1985, focuses on building lifelong relationships with consumers, small and medium size businesses, and government and education institutions by helping clients meet all their technology needs. The company had total global revenue of $9.7 billion in 2000.
