& New Zealand has launched a local version of the
GeoCities publishing and
community service that has etched a market space with consumers in the
GeoCities is designed to appeal to small and personal Web publishing,
providing the HTML tools for beginners or more advanced users to develop a
site that caters to their hobbies or interests.
Although Australian users can access the US GeoCities‘ tools, Yahoo has been
motivated to launch the Australian version on the back of figures such as
those from Nielsen/NetRatings, that
indicate that 20.5 percent of active home Internet users access the
American site in May.
With the free service, Yahoo is seeking to encourage Internet users to
become increasingly active in the online community, according to Yahoo ANZ
product director Alan Jones.
Yahoo itself also benefits, however, with site creators able to
‘increase the value’ of their site and incorporate features such as Yahoo
news, weather and search, and increase the reach of these Yahoo services
beyond the portal itself to a new sphere of potential users.
In addition to these Yahoo-centric tools, users can also add features
such as site statistics, counters and guest books in their 15MB of site
Site creators can use GeoCities’ PageWizards templates or HTML editors
to customize their site, as well as a File Manager tool to upload,
organize, edit, preview and save Web pages.
