  • Security stocks such as Secure Computing (NASDAQ:SCUR), Axent (NASDAQ:AXNT) and Verisign (NASDAQ:VSGN) ran on consolidation expectation, something we’ve been expecting for quite some time. Washington Post did a piece echoing our sentiment today, helping drive home the point.

  • Sportsline USA (NASDAQ:SPLN) CEO Michael Levy tells an investment conference crowd that ads will be important for the sports content site’s expected profitability. No surprise there in our view: ads and subscriptions have been the two key revenue streams for media no matter what medium.

  • Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO) and MCI formally launch Yahoo Online to compete with AOL. Basically this looks like InternetMCI only with a pretty face on it. Recall the MCI-News Corp disaster a few years ago. We’ll see if MCI can speak the language here and if Yahoo has enough bodies to do this.

If it wants to be AOL remember that AOL posted losses for a decade before finally turning about 6 million dues paying subscribers into positive earnings–and it kept the access revenue for itself–which is still majority of AOL’s revenue. Yahoo Online sees MCI getting the access dollars while Yahoo, ad sales on pages. Our take: not an AOL killer the way this is set up, at least not for Yahoo.
