When wireless carriers entered the smartphone market, one where users use their phones more for Internet access than for making calls, the initial strategy was a one-size-fits-all data plan that more than a few users found unpalatable, since the plans were unlimited data for a rather high price. Users have asked for tiered plans, so people who use relatively little data can pay less.
Now the carriers are listening. AT&T was first to go to a tiered plan, and Enterprise Mobile today reports that Verizon is also pondering multiple data plans for different levels of Internet use.
Verizon Wireless, the largest wireless service provider in the U.S., is looking at shifting from a single, one-size-fits-all data plan to a tiered plan based on use.
The new was disclosed by Verizon CFO John Killian in an interview with Bloomberg’s BusinessWeek.
