London Calling: ISDEX Gains as Stocks Find New Footing

Talks of rising interest rates in the U.S. have caused the market to gyrate more than the Internet dancing 3-D baby. But the disco meets Wall Street beat failed to stop a week-long drop in ISDEX, The Internet Stock Index, May 13.

Leading the week was Web-based auctioneer ONSALE (NASDAQ:ONSL) which rose on a tout from BancAmerica Robertson Stephens which put out a reiterated “buy” rating.

We think ONSL, which traded as high as $36 and change the past 52 weeks, may be the equivalent in the long-term of an electronics superstore on the Internet, sales and brand wise. It has some branding to do for sure, but being capitalized and roaring ahead helps in the race.

Meanwhile, Metricom (NASDAQ:MCOM) finds new rays of upside on the appointment of a new president and CEO. The wireless Internet services provider lets users tap into the Internet at airports and in key cities in the U.S.

High-speed cable-based Internet access provider @Home (NASDAQ:ATHM) gains 12% for the week to May 13 as it announces a mall tour to demo high-speed Internet services. And we thought only pop stars did that.

@Home also inks a deal with the nation’s 9th-largest cable operator, Century Communications, to provide services in Los Angeles and Colorado Springs–3.3 million homes passed. End of ’98 deployment is scheduled. We think @Home could rival AOL someday, maybe even surpass it due to its high-speed advantage.

And now more hot stuff from Internet World UK. Here’s a few more companies that you may want to take note of that are offering services or technologies or both that are likely to change the Webscape very soon.

  • Check out zy.com. A very compelling Web-based authoring service in which everything is done on the server. This is further evidence that applications will probably migrate to the server. zy.com is “pick and click” Web page creation, customizable and on the fly. This is the future of Web site design.

  • In the “tools aren’t dead space” comes Superscape’s 3D Web authoring. Could 3D finally be coming into its own? Let’s marry this with @Home above and then see how it looks–that’s a killer combo.

  • Macromedia (NASDAQ:MACR) showed off its Shockwave and other great tools to make a more interactive and animated Web. Its booth was constantly packed with people gazing at the demo.

  • Music via the Internet retailer mcy.com is a Berlin, Germany-based distributor of music for digital tracks and mail-order CDs. Proof that the music selling business is not limited to the U.S. only, and one that isn’t dominated by any one player in Europe.
