Lycos, Inc. today announced it acquired GuestWorld, a provider of free online guestbook services, in a stock deal valued at approximately $3.9 million.

Under terms of the agreement, GuestWorld becomes the exclusive provider of guestbook services on Lycos’ Tripod community site, and will also continue to be available for free to home page builders across the Web.

GuestWorld’s guestbook service is designed to allow visitors to register and comment on a person’s home page and automatically compile visitors’ e-mail addresses, making it easy for a home page owner to stay in touch with guests, respond to comments, and inform them of site updates.

“Joining the Lycos family gives us the marketing, technology and resources
to continue to offer the best guestbook services possible, and is a highly
effective way of introducing these services to the most active and creative
personal publishers on the Web,” said Steve Mack, co-founder of GuestWorld.
“Our guestbooks are a valuable addition to Tripod’s already outstanding
collection of tools and resources for personal publishing.”

GuestWorld will continue to operate out of its Sunnyvale, CA-based office, and Mack will become the product manager for Guestworld, reporting to Tripod vice president of marketing Scott Walker, the companies said.

Wall Street reacted positively to today’s news–Lycos (NASDAQ:LCOS) was up 1 15/16 to 55 15/16 at 11:56AM EST.
