Lycos Asia, a JV between
Lycos, Inc. and Singapore
Telecom (SingTel), this week announced the launch of Lycos Malaysia.
Lycos Malaysia includes search and navigation, local news and content,
homepage building, free e-mail and personalization capability for the localized
portal.
Content providers and advertisers on the Lycos Malaysia site include Surfing Bananas, CalendarONE,
JobsDB, JobAccess, AsiaTravelMart, Asia Travel and AsiaBourses. In addition, Lycos Malaysia
provides the start page for Jaring, Malaysia’s second largest ISP.
“Lycos is a leader in the market with localized sites in more than 24 markets worldwide,” said Bob
Davis, president and chief executive officer of Lycos. “With Lycos Asia, we first launched Lycos Singapore and today we launch Lycos Malaysia
with plans to launch additional localized sites for this region in the coming months.”
Lycos Asia was formed in September 1999 to jointly deliver localized versions of Lycos products to more than 10 Asian markets. The firm provides local portal sites in its target markets with
services such as Web navigation, search and community features, with portal site offering
local content and presented in the principal language of the local market.
Lycos Asia also powers SingNet, SingTel’s free ISP, start page and provides SingTel’s
1.8 million customers with pre-registration for MailCity Asia’s free e-mail service.
The firm’s other Asian ventures
include Lycos Korea (a joint venture with Mirae Corp. and Lycos Japan), a joint venture
with Sumitomo Corporation, Internet Initiative Japan and Kadokawa Shoten Publishing Co.
