Net Shepherd has been nominated for a 1998 Computerworld Smithsonian Award in the Business and Related Services category.

The nomination is for “Filtered Search,” the intelligent Internet filtering
technology co-developed and launched by Net Shepherd and Digital Equipment
Corporation’s AltaVista Search Service.

The Filtered Search technology combines Net Shepherd’s competency in
characterizing and filtering Internet content with AltaVista’s powerful
Internet search capability.

The award identifies and honors those whose visionary use of information
technology produces positive change and benefit to society. Nominations have
been made by the Chairs of many of the World’s leading IT companies.

The innovation in intelligent Internet content filtering was ushered in just
four short months ago with the debut of family.netshepherd, the world’s
first Filtered Search site.

Family.netshepherd, which had grown to four million hits/month by December,
lets families know that searches conducted on the site will deliver results
consistent with the standards and values of family viewers. The success of
family.netshepherd will bring the proliferation of many other Filtered
Search sites in 1998.

Net Shepherd’s case study on Filtered Search will be reviewed by a panel of
distinguished judges with the winner announced the 8th of June. A summary of
1998 nominees and their submissions will be posted on the Smithsonian’s Innovation Network.
